"The roots of this work can be traced to earliest human history when disease was seen as loss of soul and dance was an integral part of the healing process” Joan Chodorow, Jungian analyst and dance therapist.
Authentic Movement focuses upon the relationship between a mover and a witness, where equal value is given to both the moving process and the verbal sharing of the movers and the witness’s experience. The mover moves with the eyes closed and the attention inwards. The mover listens to what arises from within the body and explores spontaneous gestures, movements and stillness, following inner impulses in the present moment, whilst in the presence of at least one witness. The witness observes the mover, tracking inner responses to the mover with the intention of not judging but focusing on self awareness, sensitivity and compassion.
The particular relationship between the mover and the witness in moving and being seen by another creates a powerful framework for healing of the body psyche, an unlocking of creativity and a deepening of one’s spirituality and universality. The experience of authentic movement can feel playful, all full of fun and creativity and at other times the mover and witness may experience intense feelings and helpful insights in to the wisdom of their bodies. Through the process of moving and being witnessed, individuals can be facilitated to integrate words, experience and action and discover how working with repressed aspects of themselves can promote compassion for self and other. Painting, drawing, art making and writing are used to deepen the process and enhance personal creativity.
The original practitioners of Authentic Movement who developed the practise, Mary Starks Whitehouse, Janet Adler and Joan Chodorow integrated Jung’s concept of active imagination with modern dance improvisation.
