Africa is a continent rich and alive in dance and rhythm. Every country in Africa has a multitude of different styles of dance, making African dance hard to describe. However there are commonalities within the different dances of each country, which define African dance. The energy of the dance comes from the earth, the knees are bent when dancing, there is isolation of body parts and rhythm plays an integral part of the dance, with live percussion accompanying the dance traditionally. There are dances for all occasions, life events, celebrations and rituals. Traditionally everybody within the community is involved in the dances. The dances are fun, joyous, graceful, vibrant, life affirming and enlivening. They bring us in to contact with the divine feminine energy of the earth and are great for grounding us in our bodies, keeping us fit and having fun!
